Winchester Jazz Festival Jazz Trail welcomes Sean Gibbs and Rob Brockway to Incognito!
“When I spot trumpeter Sean Gibbs in a band my spirits lift; I know there will be spot on ensemble playing and expertly-turned, beautifully toned solos” - London Jazz News
This duo performance will feature original music characterised by lyrical melodies, strong grooves and a deep connection to the blues. Also included will be lesser heard gems from the likes of Duke Ellington and Fred Hersch.
Sean Gibbs is a Scottish jazz trumpet player and composer based in London. He is known for his work with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (including performances with guest soloists such as Kurt Elling, Joe Locke and Kenny Washington), Fervour, Young Pilgrims, the Calum Gourlay Big Band and the Mike Fletcher Jazz Orchestra. He has two critically acclaimed albums under his belt, and currently leads a quintet with Riley Stone-Lonergan, Rob Brockway, Calum Gourlay and Jay Davis. Sean has been commissioned to write for the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and Greater Manchester Jazz Orchestra, and his compositions have been performed as far afield as the USA, by the University of Miami’s Frost Studio Jazz Band.
New Zealand-born pianist Rob Brockway is credited by Sandy Brown Jazz with "that indefinable charismatic playing that has the ability to move you". Since graduating first-class from the Guildhall in 2012, he has performed with Don Weller, Henry Lowther, Mark Nightingale, Henry Spencer and Juncture, and the London City Big Band. He currently holds the piano chair in Sean's working quintet. For inspiration, he looks to Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock, then he gets distracted and plays something else.
